Description of the NHEFS Linked Mortality File
NCHS has updated the mortality linkage of the NHANES I Epidemiologic Followup Study (NHEFS) to death certificate data found in the National Death Index (NDI). The updated NHEFS Linked Mortality File provides mortality follow-up data from the date of NHANES I survey participation (1971-1975) through December 31, 2006. Mortality ascertainment is based primarily upon deaths previously identified during one of the NHEFS follow-up periods (1982-84, 1986, 1987, and 1992) and the results from a probabilistic match between NHEFS and NDI death certificate records. Linkage of the NHEFS survey participants with the NDI provides the opportunity to conduct a vast array of outcome studies designed to investigate the association of a wide variety of health factors with mortality. NCHS recommends that researchers use the new linked mortality file as it supersedes the prior data releases of the NHEFS Linked Mortality File.
There is a restricted-use NHEFS Linked Mortality File available for use in the NCHS RDC. There will not be a public-use version of the NHEFS Linked Mortality File released.
