Firearms Training

In 1934—a year after the Kansas City massacre that left four law enforcement officers dead, including a Bureau agent—Congress gave FBI agents the authority to carry firearms.

Seventy five years later, FBI agents and other law enforcement officers still face dangers. To help keep our agents safe, we provide them with a firearms training program second to none.

The primary mission of our firearms training program is to train new agents to shoot all Bureau-issued weapons in a safe and effective manner and to provide ongoing training for our agents to continue their proficiency with basic FBI weapons systems.

In addition to working with FBI agents, our experienced firearms training instructors at the FBI Academy also provide training and recertification services to our firearms instructors in our field offices. And, they support our Field Police Training program for state and local partners.
