Local Agencies Philadelphia,
Pennsylvania
The
School District of Philadelphia (SDP) in Pennsylvania receives funding from
CDC’s Division of Adolescent and School Health to provide HIV prevention
education and conduct the Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS). The goal of the
SDP HIV prevention education program is to expand and strengthen
comprehensive school health education with a particular emphasis on
preventing HIV infection, other sexually transmitted infections, and
unintended pregnancy.
Philadelphia's Program In Action
Providing HIV
Prevention Education
- Providing professional development opportunities for SDP staff on
developing, implementing and expanding HIV prevention programs and
policies.
- Assessing the degree to which health education teachers are
providing HIV prevention education and assessing student knowledge and
skills regarding the prevention of HIV, STIs, and unintended
pregnancies.
- Collaborating with Temple University to produce a collection of HIV
prevention materials and disseminating them through the Comprehensive
Health Education Resource Center and the university’s Web site.
Conducting the Youth Risk Behavior Survey
- Administering the YRBS to a representative sample of Philadelphia
high schools students, and disseminating the results to a wide range of
stakeholders.
- Using YRBS data in conjunction with other surveillance data to
improve policies and programs that reduce health risk behaviors among
school-age youth across the city.
