National Center for Education Statistics (NCES)
The National Center for Education Statistics is the primary federal statistical agency that collects and disseminates information about the condition of education in the U.S. NCES provides two primary sources of school and school district data.

  • Common Core of Data (CCD)
School district fiscal and non-fiscal data are available from the Common Core of Data (CCD). The CCD is a longitudinal data series that provides annual updates of key non-fiscal administrative characteristics for all public schools and school districts in the U.S. This includes information on location, contact information, grade levels, enrollment and race/ethnic composition, staffing, program participation, and other basic operational characteristics. The CCD fiscal data provide annual updates of school district revenues and expenditures. These data are developed in cooperation with the U.S. Census Bureau's Government Division.
  • School District Demographics (SDD)
School district demographic information is available from the School District Demographics program and data access system. These data are part of a cooperative program with the U.S. Census Bureau's Data Integration Division to produce custom tabulations of demographic survey data for school district geography. These tabulations include detailed demographic characteristics from the 1990 and 2000 census long form surveys (i.e., an STF3 and SF3 for school districts). They also include annual custom tabulations from the American Community Survey (ACS) beginning in 2006. The SDD data access system is useful for describing and analyzing characteristics of school districts, children, and K-12 education. It also provides access to school district geographic boundaries.
