PAVEMENT SMOOTHNESS NEWS

California: Revised data moves IRI numbers: California's 2003 HPMS initial submittal of IRI data reflected significant degradation of pavement smoothness on the NHS. The FHWA Division worked closely with the State to determine causes for the decline and identified errors in the data as a significant contributor. The State corrected the data errors and resubmitted the IRI data. California's percent of NHS miles with an IRI < 170 went from 85.8 to 91.6. The percent travel on the NHS in California with an IRI < 170 went from 71 to 82. The National numbers went from 93.6 to 93.8 and 90 to 91 for the miles and travel respectively. SUPERPAVE NEWS:

RD&T: FHWA Urges States to Coordinate Superpave Plus Specifications on a Regional Basis: Tom Harman, Infrastructure R&D, participated in the 32nd Annual Rocky Mountain Asphalt Conference and Equipment Show, held February 9 --11 in Denver, CO. Mr. Harman presented information on the "National Perspective on New M-E Design Guide," and provided an "FHWA Superpave Update." He also made a presentation entitled, "Not All Asphalt Modifiers Are the Same -- Understanding the Different Types and Uses of Modified Asphalt binders and the Performance Implications." During the three presentations, Harman challenged the group to get involved in the Mechanistic Design Guide implementation and encouraged them to draw on the FHWA Design Guide Implementation Team. There is a growing concern among industry representatives regarding Superpave Plus specifications, so Harman also challenged the States to coordinate Superpave Plus specifications on a regional basis to limit the negative impact on industry. For information on the conference. For more information on Superpave Plus or modified asphalt binders, please contact Tom Harman on (202) 493-3072 or contact him by e-mail at tom.harman@fhwa.dot.gov TECHNOLOGY TALKS (excerpts from weekly reports) Early March Report, 2005
