FHWA Resource Center
Knowledge Application Team
The mission of the Knowledge Application Team (KAT) is to cultivate, nurture, and leverage FHWA's collective knowledge to effectively accomplish agency business goals and objectives. The team provides organizational leadership and direction to FHWA's management and staff to implement knowledge management principles and practices, institutionalize knowledge sharing, and enable creation of a comprehensive learning organization. Through the use of innovative tools such as communities of practice (CoPs), expertise location, and distance learning the Agency is able to:
• Build and maintain networks,
• Reduce the learning curve for new employees,
• Capture agency expertise and share practices,
• Advance corporate and professional development, and
• Enhance service to our customers and partners across the highway community.
CoP's are networks of people with mutual interests, goals or expertise working together to exchange ideas and information, share and collaborate on focus areas or projects, speed technology transfer, identify best practices, and advance the state-of-the-art in their fields. CoP's cut across organizational and geographic boundaries. Some may include only internal FHWA staff, while others may also include external partners and customers, e.g., state and local DOT's, associations, industry, and citizens.
