Bateman, Fred B.

I joined the staff of the NIST Ionizing Radiation Division, Radiation Interactions and Dosimetry Group, in the fall of 1998 as a research physicist. My primary responsibilities include maintenance and quality assurance for several electron accelerators to support a broad user community as well as to conduct intramural research. These accelerators are employed in a number of applications such as homeland security, radiation hardness testing, and medical and industrial dosimetry. In recent years, we have expanded our capabilities to include a clinical radiotherapy accelerator capable of delivering therapy-quality radiation fields which will support the development of high-energy dosimetry standards and user calibrations.

Research Interests

In addition to developing new accelerator monitoring capabilities and experimental apparatus to support user projects, my own research includes the development and testing of a high-energy x-ray computed tomography system for homeland security applications.I have also been conducting dosimetry comparison studies to help facilitate the development of a water calorimeter which will become the national dosimetry standard for high-energy clinical photon beams.Another ongoing effort is to develop and test high-dose rate graphite calorimeters to measure electron beam doses in high-energy electron beams.

Standards Committees and Professional Organizations

Co-chair of ASTM E10.01 Task Group H, charged with maintaining ISO/ASTM Standard 51631, pertaining to calorimetry standards for electron beam dose measurements.

Member of AAPM Task Group 136, charged with identifying hazards associated with induced radioactivity produced by medical accelerators.
