On May 10, 2011 Congressman Charles Boustany of Louisiana spoke about the current situation in Lebanon and how it is fairing in the Arab Spring, as Syria and the Arab world are being rocked by historic change.

Congressman Boustany was first elected to Congress in December 2004. He represents Louisiana's Seventh Congressional District. He is the co-chair of the U.S.-China Working Group and is active on foreign affairs issues related to the Midle East. Congressman Boustany is also a member of the House Ways and Means Committee and serves as the chair of the Subcommittee on Oversight.

This event was part of the United States Institute of Peace's Congressional Newsmaker Series, designed to educate the public about issues of war and peace with a special focus on international conflict prevention and resolution.   

The orientation of U.S. public diplomacy is changing from telling America’s story to direct dialogue in an interconnected world. With this shift has come a need to revitalize a core pillar of public diplomacy strategy: international exchanges. This event explored how access to international study and cultural exchange could be broadened by combining new media with crosscultural dialogue. This event took place on April 27, 2011.

On April 26, 2011, the United States Institute of Peace (USIP) and the National Democratic Institute (NDI) held a live video conference with senior representatives of the Bahraini opposition.

Since 2005, Pakistan's largest province, Balochistan, has been the site of a nationalist, armed insurgency. On April 15, 2011, USIP hosted a panel discussion on the insurgency, and the implications of continued armed struggle for both the Pakistani state and the region.

On February 9, 2011, USIP launched a new Special Report entitled "Reforming Pakistan's Police and Law Enforcement Infrastructure: Is It Too Flawed to Fix?" Panelists examined the obstacles to reform and highlighted the importance of civilian law enforcement in Pakistan in light of the challenges the country faces.

On April 20, 2011 H.E. Dr. Jean Ping, Chairperson of the AU Commission, discussed the role that the African Union continues to play in creating peace and establishing security in Africa.

USIP's Haiti Working Group hosted a panel of distinguished experts on Haiti who discussed the prospects for Haiti's new leadership. This event took place on April 20, 2011.

Looking ahead to southern Sudan’s secession and the future of both resulting states, three members of the African Union High Level Implementation Panel (Sudan), former South African President Thabo Mbeki, former Burundian President Pierre Buyoya, and former Nigerian President Abdulsalami Abubakar, discussed the current situation and their efforts to support two peaceful Sudans. This event took place on April 19, 2011.

After heavy U.S. investment in Pakistan’s defense forces since 9/11, there is growing interest in the state of the broader security sector in Pakistan. A panel of distinguished experts discussed the challenges impeding security sector reform in Pakistan and the implications for the region. This event took place on April 19, 2011.

Father Ivo Markovic, a Bosnian Friar, is a founder of Pontanima, an interreligious choir based in Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina. It is widely acclaimed as an innovative peacemaking project, a shining representation of Bosnia-Herzegovina, and a major contributor to the country's cultural life. Father Ivo gave a talk on the status of interreligious cooperation and reconciliation in today's Bosnia, which remains a very unsettled place even 16 years after the war ended.
