The United States is proud to be supporting Botswana in continuing to lead its fight against HIV/AIDS. In December 2010, the Governments of Botswana and the United States signed a Partnership Framework on HIV/AIDS, which outlines a joint strategy from 2010 to 2014. Under the Framework, Botswana and the United States will work together to maintain services and address gaps, improve the quality and sustainability of the national response, leverage additional donor resources, and build local capacity to improve program sustainability.

Since the beginning of the national response, the Government of Botswana has led the country’s response to HIV/AIDS, including supporting large-scale delivery of HIV services. PEPFAR is supporting the Botswana’s leadership by filling service delivery gaps and providing technical support.

• Adult (15–49) HIV prevalence, 2009: 24.8%¹
• Estimated adults and children (ages 0-49) living with HIV, 2009: 320,000¹
• HIV-related deaths, 2009: 5,800¹
• Orphans due to AIDS, 2009: 93,000¹
• Estimated antiretroviral coverage based on WHO 2010 guidelines, 2009: 83%²
• Estimated percentage of pregnant women living with HIV who received antiretrovirals for preventing mother-to-child transmission, 2009: >95%²

Saving Lives: PEPFAR Program Results

Progress achieved in Botswana through direct PEPFAR support during fiscal year (FY) 2010:³

• 12,200 individuals receiving antiretroviral treatment
• 66,300 HIV-positive individuals who received care and support (including TB/HIV)
• 36,700 orphans and vulnerable children (OVCs) receiving support
• 145,900 individuals received counseling and testing

Botswana has also benefitted from grants from the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria, to which the U.S. is the largest single contributor. For more information on grants from the Global Fund, visit www.theglobalfund.org.
