Farmers Can Save Money and Help the Environment
headline bar

Nitrogen losses from agricultural lands can be reduced more readily if farmers benefit through increased revenues. ARS scientists at the Southwest Watershed Research Center, Tucson, AZ, used NRCS’ EconDocs software to develop a series of crop budgets for current and reduced N loading management systems in tile-drained agriculture. These budgets demonstrate to farmers the economic benefits of management systems that reduce N loadings, and could be used to revise conservation programs to encourage farmers to adopt management systems that reduce N loadings from tile-drained agricultural systems.
