KANDAHAR, Afghanistan – Forty-five student drivers maneuvered their way onto a dirt field in tan colored up-armored Humvees and green, light terrain vehicles. When they reached a staging area, ground guides jumped out of each Humvee to direct their driver into parking spots identified by black, triangular markers.

The students, consisting of Afghan National Army soldiers and recruits and a few Afghan National Policemen, are in an up-armored Humvee course taught independently by ANA instructors. This is the third course ANA instructors have taught autonomously since the six-person U.S. Marine Corps training advisory team transitioned the course over to the 205th Corps in November 2011.

Sgt. 1st Class Shazadgul is a six-year ANA veteran, originally from Mazar-e-Sharif, is now the UAH course head instructor.

“The instructor training I received from the coalition forces was very sufficient,” said Shazadgul through an interpreter. “I’ve taught and oversaw the past and current classes and can see the students are reacting very well to the training. This was made possible through the partnership we’ve had with coalition forces.”

Pvt. Zulmay, a 19-year-old Afghan National Army recruit just three months into his enlistment, didn’t know a lot about vehicles before this course. Now, the instructors identify him as the best student in the course.

“Before, I didn’t know how to drive vehicles or do preventative maintenance checks,” said Zulmay through an interpreter. “Now, I do and I’m happy I joined the Afghan National Army. I have good instructors.”

The students started week four of the six-week course. The course started with in-class instruction on safety and accident avoidance, identifying Humvee and LTV components, and performing routine preventative maintenance checks.

Students have to demonstrate their ability to drive on different terrain and must meet the program of instruction standard in order to be qualified as Humvee and LTV operators.
