Prescription Drug Use Among Detainees: Prevalence, Sources and Links to Crime

ANNOTATION: “This report is the first of its kind in Australia to examine the self-reported use of illicit pharmaceuticals among a sample of police detainees surveyed as part of the Australian Institute of Criminology’s Drug Use Monitoring in Australia (DUMA) program” (p.1). This publication builds upon the little research done on the abuse (or non-medical use) of prescribed drugs by offenders. Findings are provided for :type of pharmaceuticals taken in the previous 12 months; sample characteristics; drugs use in combination with pharmaceuticals; scripts obtained from doctors; other sources of scripts; scripts written in someone else’s name; other ways of obtaining pharmaceuticals; relationship between pharmaceutical use and offense categories; and the relationship between benzodiazephine use and illicit drug use. Use of non-medical prescription drug use is significantly higher among police detainees (19%) than in the general public (4%).
