What is Section 508 and website accessibility?

Section 508 is an amendment to the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 which requires that Federal electronic and information technology be accessible to people with disabilities. This includes technology ranging from faxes and phones, to websites, files on websites, and software programs.

Web accessibility means that people with disabilities have equal access to all websites and attached files. More specifically, Web accessibility means that people with disabilities can perceive, understand, navigate, and interact with the Web, and that they can contribute to the Web. Standards for accessibility of web-based information are promulgated by the US Access Board.
