Mismatch between veteran job seekers and employers' needs
Published: May 30, 2012
WASHINGTON - On one of the largest job sites right now there’s a distinct gap between what employers are looking for and what veterans bring to the table.
A Monster.com survey of 900 veterans and 900 employers suggests that the experience and education level of veterans doesn’t match the positions posted to the website - and that's reflected in the confidence level veterans have in finding a job that suits them. The survey, conducted in April and released Wednesday, found that only 29 percent felt good about their prospects.
The mismatch:
- 53 percent of job postings seek candidates with a college degree, but only 21 percent of veterans on the site are college graduates
- 69 percent of jobs are mid-level positions, but only 41 percent of veteran job seekers are in that place in their career
- 13 percent of listings are for executive-level positions, but 22 percent of veterans are seeking those kind of jobs
- 10 percent of jobs require an associate's degree or some college, but that's the education level of 45 percent of veterans on the website
The good news for veterans: 99 percent of employers who have hired a vet in the last year recommend other companies do the same.
