U.S. to Investigate Canadian Paper Mill Deal

PRESQUE ISLE, ME – Today, Congressman Mike Michaud praised United States Trade Representative (USTR) Ron Kirk for promptly responding to his request to examine the details of the financial package offered by the provincial government of Nova Scotia to a paper mill in Port Hawkesbury. Michaud sent a letter to USTR Kirk on September 26th requesting that he obtain complete information about the province’s rescue package and determine whether it is consistent with Canada’s NAFTA and World Trade Organization (WTO) commitments. If violations are found, Michaud has urged for expeditious action.

WASHINGTON, DC – A news story recently highlighted the story of a deployed Air Force Master Sergeant who was twice issued boots made in China. When he asked how he could exchange them for American-made boots, he was told “good luck.” Congressman Mike Michaud is now joining forces with Congressman Duncan Hunter (R-CA) to build support across the aisle on Capitol Hill in order to put pressure on the Department of Defense (DOD) to address this issue and broader military procurement problems.

Madawaska to Receive $250,000 for Economic Development and Tourism Promotion

PRESQUE ISLE, ME – Today, Congressman Mike Michaud announced that the Northern Border Regional Commission (NBRC) has approved $250,000 for the Town of Madawaska. According to the NBRC, the funding will be used to promote a regional effort to expand economic development and tourism opportunities for communities in the St. John Valley region by investing in the expansion of recreational facilities within the towns of Madawaska, St. Agatha, and Frenchville. The NBRC funds will be matched with state and local funds for a total project cost of $692,512. This effort is in advance of the 2014 World Acadian Congress event that will take place in the region.
