NIDDK OTTD Fellowship
About the Fellowship
The Technology Transfer Fellowship in the Office of Technology Transfer and Development (OTTD) at the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK) is designed to engage current NIDDK Postdoctoral Fellows in technology transfer - an interdisciplinary field involving science, business and law. Fellows who would like to learn about intellectual property (patent) law, biomedical product development and commercialization, or transactional agreements may be interested in this training opportunity. This fellowship is designed to provide specialized training related to:
- transactional agreements governing research collaborations and the exchange of proprietary materials and confidential information,
- the patenting, marketing, and licensing of intellectual property, and
- technology transfer policies from the public sector perspective.
- Interns will develop an understanding of and basic skills essential to technology transfer, particularly within the federal government and National Institutes of Health (NIH).
This fellowship provides NIDDK Postdoctoral Fellows the opportunity to utilize their scientific background and training while experiencing a new career option in technology transfer, which advances NIDDK’s scientific programs and benefits the public health by facilitating the use and further development of innovative NIDDK technologies. Interns work with OTTD’s technology transfer specialists and may, on occasion, interact with business development professionals within and outside the NIH.
During the Fellowship, fellows engage in a broad spectrum of technology transfer activities. Examples of typical projects may include:
- analyzing transactional agreements,
- analyzing invention disclosures,
- writing technology summaries and marketing abstracts, and
- participating in discussions regarding research collaborations, the exchange of materials, data, and ideas, and the further development and commercialization of intellectual property.
The Fellow is assigned to a senior NIDDK OTTD staff member, who provides mentoring and guidance, and ensures that the fellowship is a focused, engaging training experience. Interns spend part of their training time in an assigned NIDDK Laboratory and part of their time in the NIDDK OTTD. Interns may not represent the Government in negotiations or sign documents on behalf of the Government.
