Data Table Crime Against Persons with Disabilities, 2008-2010 - Statistical Tables

Erika Harrell, Ph.D.

October 13, 2011    NCJ 235777

Presents estimates of nonfatal violent victimization (rape, sexual assault, robbery, aggravated and simple assault) against persons age 12 or older with disabilities, from 2008 to 2010. Findings are based on the National Crime Victimization Survey (NCVS). The report compares the victimization of persons with and without disabilities, types of disabilities, and victim and crime characteristics using population estimates based on the Census Bureau's American Community Survey (ACS). Data are presented on victim and crime characteristics of persons with and without disabilities, including distributions by age, race and sex; offender weapon possession; victim injuries; and reporting to the police.

Highlights include the following:

  • Persons age 12 or older who had disabilities experienced an estimated 567,000 nonfatal violent crimes in 2010.
  • In 2010, the age-adjusted violent victimization rate for persons with disabilities (28 violent victimizations per 1,000) was almost twice the rate among persons without disabilities (15 violent victimizations per 1,000).
  • In 2010, for both males and females the age-adjusted rate of violent crime was greater for those with disabilities than the rate against those without disabilities. The rate for males with disabilities was 23 per 1,000, compared to 16 per 1,000 for males without disabilities; for females with disabilities the rate was 26 per 1,000, compared to 15 per 1,000 for females without disabilities.
