Elementary School Teacher Categories and Requirements

Elementary School Positions

0090: Teacher, Pre kindergarten

A major in early childhood education (ECE) or a degree in elementary education with 24 SH in ECE is required. The 24 SH must be in course description or title containing early childhood, kindergarten, or pre kindergarten training. Course work in methods of teaching emerging literacy and methods of teaching mathematics for early childhood, kindergarten, or pre kindergarten is required. Two years of full-time experience teaching pre kindergarten or kindergarten may be substituted for 3 SH of the required ECE course work.

0095: Teacher, Kindergarten

A major in early childhood education (ECE) or a degree in elementary education with 24 SH in ECE is required. Course work in methods of teaching emerging literacy and methods of teaching mathematics for early childhood, kindergarten, or pre kindergarten is required. Two years of full-time experience teaching pre kindergarten or kindergarten may be substituted for 3 SH of the required ECE course work.

0096: Teacher, Kindergarten, Language Immersion

Applicants must meet the educational requirements for category 0095. Applicants must provide proof of near native proficiency to instruct languages in German, Spanish, Italian, Japanese, or Korean. The proof of near native proficiency is evidenced by submitting a rating of an "Advanced High" or "Superior" rating from the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages, Inc. (ACTFL). ACTFL may be contacted at (914) 963-7110 (Language Testing) to make arrangements for an Oral Proficiency Interview (OPI).

0101-0103: Teacher, Elementary grades 1-3

Course work must include methods of teaching reading, math, language arts, and science. Note: In addition, a methods course or 1 year teaching experience in art, music, or physical education in the elementary school is required. Two years elementary classroom experience is desired. All applicants must have completed a minimum of 3 SH containing early childhood education if reassignment to lower elementary grades 1-3 becomes necessary for continuous employment.

0104-0106: Teacher, Elementary grades 4-6

Course work must include methods of teaching reading, math, language arts, and science. Note: In addition, a methods course or 1 year teaching experience in art, music, or physical education in the elementary school is required. Two years elementary classroom experience is desired. All applicants must have completed a minimum of 3 SH containing early childhood education if reassignment to lower elementary grades 1-3 becomes necessary for continuous employment.

0107-0108: Teacher, Elementary grades 7-8

Course work must include methods of teaching reading, math, language arts, and science. Note: In addition, a methods course or 1 year teaching experience in art, music, or physical education in the elementary school is required. Two years elementary classroom experience is desired. All applicants must have completed a minimum of 3 SH containing early childhood education if reassignment to lower elementary grades 1-3 becomes necessary for continuous employment.

0109: Teacher, Compensatory Education Reading (Elementary)

The applicant seeking an endorsement in Compensatory Education, Reading, shall fulfill all the requirements for an endorsement in elementary education and have a minimum of 24 SH of course work in reading/language arts. Two years elementary classroom experience is desired.

0110: Teacher, Compensatory Education, Mathematics (Elementary)

The applicant seeking an endorsement in Compensatory Education, Mathematics, shall fulfill all the requirements for an endorsement in elementary education and have a minimum of 15 SH of course work in mathematics. Two years elementary classroom experience is desired.

0148: Teacher, Elementary grades 1-3, Language Immersion

Applicants must first meet the educational requirements for categories 0101-0108. Applicants must provide proof of near native proficiency to instruct languages in German, Spanish, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Arabic, Chinese, or French. The American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages, Inc. 0149: Teacher, Elementary grades 4-8, Language Immersion

Applicants must first meet the educational requirements for categories 0101-0108. Applicants must provide proof of near native proficiency to instruct languages in German, Spanish, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Arabic, Chinese, or French. 0150: Elementary Teacher, Art

A major in art or a minimum of 24 SH in art is required. Course work must include a methods course in teaching art at the elementary level and at least one course each in drawing, painting, and art history/art appreciation. A minimum of 9 upper level semester hours in art is required.

0151: Elementary Teacher, Music

A major in music or a minimum of 24 SH in music is required. Course work must include a methods course in teaching music at the elementary level. A minimum of 9 upper level semester hours in music is required.

0155: Elementary Teacher, Physical Education

A major in physical education or a minimum of 24 SH in physical education. Course work must include a methods course in teaching physical education at the elementary level. A minimum of 9 upper level semester hours in physical education is required.

0158: Teacher, Foreign Language Elementary School/Spanish (FLES)

DoDEA or State certificate as an elementary classroom teacher AND 24 semester hours in Spanish

or,
DoDEA or State certificate as an elementary classroom teacher AND Spanish Language
communication skill as verified by an ACTFL Oral Proficiency Interview (OPI) rating of at least an intermediate low score
or
DoDEA or State certificate as a secondary Spanish teacher AND must complete 9 semester hours in elementary methods course work in the following specific areas of study: 1. classroom management for elementary school; 2. teaching foreign language in elementary school. The elementary methods course work must be completed before the third school year of employment.
or,
DoDEA or State certificate as a secondary classroom teacher AND Spanish Language
communication skill as verified by an ACTFL Oral Proficiency interview (OPI) rating of at least an intermediate low score AND must complete 9 semester hours in elementary methods course work in the following specific areas of study: I. classroom management for elementary school; 2. teaching foreign language in elementary school. The elementary methods course work must be completed before the third school year of employment.
