Diabetes Projects
Chronic Kidney Disease Initiative
Mission
The Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) Initiative is designed to provide public health
strategies for promoting kidney health. These strategies seek to prevent
and control risk factors for CKD, to raise
awareness, to promote early diagnosis, and to improve outcomes and
quality of life for those living with CKD.
Partnership base
To accomplish our goal, CDC's Division of Diabetes Translation (DDT) is
collaborating with other divisions and centers at CDC and developing an
external partner network with the National Kidney Disease Education
Program, other national groups, and other interested partners.
Objectives
(1) Develop capacity and infrastructure at CDC for a kidney disease
surveillance, epidemiology, health outcomes, and health economics
program;
(2) Award grants to support several state-based demonstration projects
for CKD detection, prevention, and control; and
(3) Convene a consensus conference of kidney
disease experts and other stakeholders to establish priorities and strategies in the
public health approach to kidney disease prevention and control.
Activities
Surveillance and epidemiology
(1) On-going project for establishing a national surveillance system
for kidney disease.
(2) Supplement kidney measures in the National Health and Nutrition
Examination Survey.
(3) Supplement Health, Aging, and Body Composition study, which targets
people aged 70 years or older at high risk of developing CKD
http://www.nia.nih.gov/ResearchInformation/ScientificResources/HealthABCDescription.htm
Health outcomes and economics
(1) On-going cost of illness study, including direct and indirect costs.
(2) On-going cost-effectiveness study using a lifetime simulation model
to assess the costs and benefits of various interventions.
Demonstration project
On-going project for identifying individuals at high risk for CKD in the
United States.
Expert consensus to establish priorities and strategies
Expert panel meeting to lay the framework for comprehensive public health
strategies for preventing the development and progression, and complications of CKD.
