Hosts Town Hall Meeting on The Future of Medicare

June 26, 1998

Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) highlighted the accomplishments of Medicare today, and called for efforts to strengthen and expand the program. "We must ensure that Medicare remains financially sound without placing increased burdens on beneficiaries," Pelosi said. Rep. Pelosi spoke at a Town Hall Meeting on the Future of Medicare, which she co-hosted with Health Access California.

"Medicare can serve as a foundation for increased access to health care for all Americans," Pelosi said. "In many ways, Medicare leads the way in health care reform. I applaud the President's announcement this week that Medicare recipients will be covered by expanded patient protections. We must work to extend these protections to all managed care plans. In addition, I am very pleased that Medicare beneficiaries will have more options under the Medicare + Choice program which will be introduced later in the year."

Pelosi also voiced support for the President's Medicare "buy-in" proposal, which would allow individuals 62 - 64, displaced workers over 55, and others to purchase Medicare coverage. "Congress must act to extend Medicare coverage to people in this age group, many of whom have difficulty purchasing affordable health care elsewhere," Pelosi say. The Congresswoman is an original cosponsor of the Medicare Early Buy-In Act.
