Pelosi Expresses Sadness at the Loss of AIDS Researcher Jonathan Mann

September 4, 1998

Congresswoman Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) today expressed her sadness at the loss of Jonathan Mann, Mary Lou Clements Mann, and others aboard the Swissair flight that crashed off Nova Scotia on Wednesday night. "The world has lost a great public health leader," Pelosi said. "Jonathan Mann challenged us to understand the global dimensions of the AIDS epidemic. He saw that in fighting AIDS we must also fight discrimination, ignorance and poverty as well as a deadly virus.

"The legacies of Jonathan Mann and Mary Lou Clements Mann should inspire us to work with increased commitment to finding more affordable treatments for AIDS, and a vaccine that is accessible around the world. And we must also preserve Mann's vision of public health, a vision that recognizes the economic and human rights which are necessary to foster healthy individuals and communities."
