Congresswoman Nancy Pelosi Announces $125,000 HUD Grant For Drug Fighting In Low Income Housing

November 7, 1997

Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) today announced a Department of Housing and Urban Development grant of $125,000 for drug fighting programs at the Prince Hall Apartments. "Drug dealers are preying on the poor, bringing crime to the neighborhood, and very simply making life miserable for the vast majority of residents who are trying to find their way to a better life. This grant helps us fight drug-related crime and improve the lives of law-abiding residents," Pelosi said.

The grant will help pay for increased police protection, improvements to the security fence, and a variety of programs including drug counseling and prevention and a computerized learning center. The learning center will offer courses in computer training, resume writing, reading and math, and after school tutorials.

"This grant provides for a two-pronged attack on illegal drugs. It gives officials the resources to fight drug crime and offers residents access to tools that also improve the quality of their lives," Pelosi said.
