WOMEN LAWMAKERS PRAISE PRESIDENT CLINTON'S STANCE ON FAMILY PLANNING

November 10, 1997

WASHINGTON -- Three of the House of Representatives' most outspoken proponents of international family planning today praised President Clinton for his resolve not to link international family planning negotiations with Fast Track negotiations.

Congresswomen Nancy Pelosi (D-CA), Nita Lowey (D-NY) and Rosa DeLauro (D-CT), all opponents of this version of Fast Track legislation, have been critical of efforts by Republican lawmakers to link a reduction in international family planning to their support of Fast Track legislation.

"Thanks to President Clinton's leadership, the lives of poor women around the world will not be held hostage to the politics of the Fast Track debate," said Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-CA), ranking Democrat on the House Foreign Operations Appropriations Subcommittee, which funds international family planning programs.

"The health and safety of women and their families is too important to be used as a political bargaining chip," said Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro (D-CT). "I commend the President for separating international family planning from fast track legislation and look forward to working with the Administration to fashion a trade policy that works for all Americans."

"The President assured me personally that he would reject GOP attempts to trade women's lives and health for Fast Track votes," said Nita M. Lowey (D-NY). "Bill Clinton deserves real praise for refusing to link Fast Track and family planning and I am sure that he will continue to stand firm on this critical issue."
