It Takes An Army To Win: Meet The Crew
TONY GIBSON
CREW CHIEF
Tony Gibson will again call the shots for driver Ryan Newman and the No. 39 U.S. Army Chevrolet during the 2012 NASCAR Sprint Cup season. As crew chief for Newman and the No. 39 U.S. Army Chevrolet for the past three seasons, Gibson has led the team to two victories (Phoenix International Raceway in 2010 and New Hampshire Motor Speedway in 2011), six poles, 18 top-fives and 46 top-10s.
The highlight of Gibson’s tenure with the U.S. Army team came just last season in July at New Hampshire Motor Speedway in Loudon, when No. 39 team celebrated in victory lane for the first time in U.S. Army colors. The win came as Newman drove his No. 39 U.S. Army Chevrolet from the pole and led six times for a race-high 119 laps en route to his 15th career Sprint Cup victory and his third win at New Hampshire.
Gibson brings a high level of leadership and experience to Stewart-Haas Racing and the U.S. Army team, which has been developed through his work in the Sprint Cup garage since 1986. He's been a part of three Cup title-winning teams -- two with Jeff Gordon in 1998 and 2001 and one with the late Alan Kulwicki in 1992.
Pit Crew Members
Up to 10 crew members stay behind the wall during pit stops, and they're responsible for all aspects of the tires, engine performance and mechanical system maintenance. At race time, seven pit crew members go "over the wall," and they include:
GAS CAN MAN
Responsible for fueling the car during pit stops and also calculates fuel mileage during the race.
REAR TIRE CARRIER
Carries tires over the wall to assist the tire changer during pit stops, will also assist with chassis adjustments during pit stops.
REAR TIRE CHANGER
Changes right and left rear tires during pit stops.
JACK MAN
Will jack the car up for tire changers during pit stops.
FRONT TIRE CHANGER
Changes right and left front tires during pit stops.
FRONT TIRE CARRIER
Carries tires over the wall to assist the tire changer during pit stops.
