The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) defines a tsunami as a series of ocean waves caused by any rapid large-scale disturbance of the seawater. Earthquakes generate most tsunamis, but volcanic eruptions, landslides, undersea slumps or meteor impacts may also cause them.
