The Office of the Chief Information Officer (OCIO) has the primary
responsibility for information technology and information management for the Food Safety and
Inspection Service (FSIS), both in headquarters and in the field. The office leads the
development and maintenance of the Information Technology (IT) and telecommunications infrastructure
to support regulatory decision making and to support food safety, public health, and food security.
OCIO IT Vision
OCIO will securely deliver high-quality information to those who need it, when they need it,
and how they need it. We will achieve this in an environment driven by data and information and
sustain a quality-focused, highly productive, service-oriented and responsive organization based
upon world-class information delivery and infrastructure capabilities.
The Office of the Chief Information Officer achieves this IT Vision by expanding electronic government
initiatives to make FSIS OCIO more cost-effective and responsive to citizens, businesses, and other
government entities. OCIO provides useful IT solutions that are aimed at streamlining the collection of
data, leveraging web technologies, making the Internet/Intranet the method of choice for the reporting
and exchanging of information, and making more effective, thoughtful use of our IT resources to reduce
the burden on citizens, businesses, and other government entities.
OCIO IT Mission
OCIO will provide FSIS innovative, timely, reliable, and secure business technology services and
business value through a thorough understanding of the Agency's mission, knowledge of requirements,
strong communication, an agile strategy and a strong customer focus. Our mission will enhance FSIS's
role of protecting the food supply and improving our Nation's food defense.
The Office of the Chief Information Officer achieves this IT Mission by providing leadership, guidance,
and direction in applying available IT resources to maximize the results of the Agency as a whole and to
provide an environment that enables the accomplishment of FSIS OCIO's business strategy. Our
commitment to these efforts will ensure that the Agency acquires, develops, implements, and manages
IT in a manner that best meets the needs of FSIS OCIO stakeholders and staff and supports sound IT
investment decision-making. In so doing, we hope to position FSIS OCIO as an IT leader within the Federal Government.
