Yokota concert to raise money for tsunami victims
YOKOTA AIR BASE, Japan — A free concert will be held Saturday at Yokota to raise money for the tsunami victims in northern Japan.
Seven bands — performing everything from Irish rock to Latin jazz — will take the stage at the Sakura band shell on Yokota’s east side for what organizers are calling “Tomodachi Stock,” an homage to the legendary 1969 concert and the name of the U.S. military aid operation in Japan.
The music will begin at noon as organizers aim to entertain Yokota residents and personnel while raising money for the Red Cross Earthquake/Tsunami Relief fund during the all-day concert.
The U.S. Army Japan band — which recently played several morale gigs in the devastated northeast — and the Air Force Band of the Pacific-Asia will also play in the WWII-era amphitheater.
Local food vendors will be selling snacks and drinks, with all profits going to the Red Cross charity fund, Yokota spokeswoman Capt. Tania Bryan said.
