The Department of Veterans Affairs has established new measures to ensure all inpatient surgeries are performed under the safest possible conditions at facilities with the resources to support them. VA assigned each of its medical centers an inpatient "surgical complexity" level.

These programs are designed to ensure that the best overall care is made available to the veteran patient.

SCS program office is headquartered in VA Central Office (VACO) and is headed by the Chief Consultant. The Chief Consultant is assisted by a number of VACO and field based national program directors and chiefs. Together they provide oversight, guidance, direction, supervision and consultation to field staff. This structure is set in a fashion that allows for an open interface and networking of all SCS components.
