Housing

Students will be offered housing in groups of four in modern, furnished, four-bedroom, two-bathroom apartments near the NIST campus, near bus routes that extend to all parts of Boulder, Denver, and Denver International Airport. Men and women have separate apartments.

Students will be responsible for paying a housing deposit and rent which are covered by the subsistence allowance. Instructions will be provided to accepted students in the spring. Housing will be ready for occupancy on May 19, 2012. Rooms must be vacated by noon on August 4, 2012. (Students on academic quarter systems who will start their SURF program after May 19 must still vacate by August 4. These students will be responsible for arranging their own housing after August 4. SURF representatives will suggest some possibilities.)

Although not recommended, students who wish to make their own living arrangements, separate from the other students, will be allowed to do so. Students may alternatively live with family in or near Boulder. Students will get the most benefit from the SURF experience by sharing housing with the other SURF students.

The Boulder area is rich in cultural and recreational opportunities. Denver and Boulder offer theater, movies, restaurants, museums, shopping, and evening entertainment. Recreational activities, organized by the students, may include hiking and camping in the Rocky Mountains, Colorado Rockies' baseball games, trips to nearby sites such as Rocky Mountain National Park, Garden of the Gods, Great Sand Dunes National Park, Mesa Verde National Park, and local amusement venues such as Six Flags Elitch Gardens.
