National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA)
The National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) of 1969 was signed into law on January 1, 1970, and was the first major environmental law in the United States. NEPA requires a systematic assessment of the environmental impacts of proposed federal actions and consideration of alternative ways of fulfilling those actions that may be less damaging to the environment.
In the Rocky Mountain Region (RMR), we apply NEPA to our PBS programs which include federal construction, leasing and major repair and alteration projects. We work closely with our colleagues in the regional Historic Preservation Program, the Urban Development / Good Neighbor Program, and the LEED® Program. Using our Sustainability and Environmental Management System ensures that we provide excellent facilities for our client agencies while minimizing impacts to the human environment.
Additionaly, the RMR NEPA program oversees the site due diligence program for all federally acquired sites in the region to ensure that acquired properties do not have environmental contamination that would threaten the health and safety of building occupants in federal space.
