Army National Guard Survivor Services

Through a cooperative effort with Parent Services, Veteran Service Organizations, Casualty and Mortuary Affairs Operations Center (CMAOC), Casualty Assistance Centers (CACs) and Communities, the Army National Guard provides ongoing support to Soldiers and Families through Military Funeral Honors, Casualty Assistance and Survivor Outreach Services.

The Army National Guard provides professional military funeral honors, in accordance with service tradition, to all eligible Veterans and fallen Warriors. The ARNG supports 82 percent of Military Funeral Honors for the Army and 58 percent of Funeral Honors for all Services combined. In FY11, the Army National Guard provided Military Funeral Honors for 136,389 veterans.

The Army National Guard provides full support to Casualty Operations, providing Notification Officers within 4 hours of initial Casualty reports and Assistance Officers for as long as the family needs. The ARNG has Soldiers ready to assist in all 54 States and Territories. The ARNG conducts Casualty missions for all Soldiers in the National Guard, Active Component, and Army Reserve. During FY11, the Army National Guard participated in 700 Casualty Missions. Each State has representatives that can be contacted by the CAC at any time to provide immediate assistance to surviving Family Members.

The Army Survivor Outreach Services (SOS) program provides substantial support to families to ensure they receive the most current information on benefits and entitlements, and have access to long-term financial and emotional support, life-skills education, supportive counseling (individually and/or group format), information and referral services. Each State and Territory has at least one SOS coordinator. The SOS program will provide access to information and services in a caring, supportive environment in a location closest to where the Surviving Family resides when, and for as long as, they desire. In FY11, the ARNG SOS program provided services to over 9,244 Survivors.
