UNITED STATES MARSHALS, EASTERN DISTRICT OF LOUISIANA, HOST MCDONOUGH CITY PARK ACADEMY MIDDLE SCHOOL STUDENTS DURING POWER TIES CAREER DAY |

Orleans, LA – On May 13, 2011, students from McDonough City Park Academy,
who expressed careers in law or law enforcement, visited the Eastern District of
Louisiana United States Marshals Office in New Orleans, LA. The students spent
the morning with District Deputies learning about a typical day in the life of a
Deputy U.S. Marshal and attorneys who practice within the Federal courthouse.
The students were welcomed to the District and given an overview of the U.S.
Marshals Service (USMS) by Chief Deputy U.S. Marshal Steven Hartman. Then the
students went to U.S. Magistrate court where they witnessed initial appearances,
arraignments and detention hearings. After Magistrate Court, U.S. District
Magistrate Judge Louis Moore Jr. spoke with the students about his experiences
and explained the process for becoming a Federal Magistrate. Judge Moore
provided the students with guidance and words of encouragement. The students
also had an opportunity to learn about the Federal Public Defenders Office from
PD attorney Sam Scillitani.
The students later toured the USMS Operations and Enforcement Sections along with the cellblock and the U.S. District Court/Hale Boggs Federal Building Court Security Control Center. The students’ visit concluded with them eating lunch with the deputies, where their final follow-up questions about the United States Marshals Service were answered. The trip ended with two students wanting to become U.S. Marshals and the other two wanting to become prosecutors.
The students’ visit was part of a program called Power Ties in conjunction with New Orleans Outreach, the Junior League and the Young Leadership Council. Power Ties is a career awareness program that links professionals from various occupations with local eighth grade students. The students are put through a structured career development and skills lesson which includes resume writing/critiquing, interviewing techniques and job site visits to occupations in which the students have expressed an interest.
