September 28, 2012

MINNEAPOLIS (KMSP) -

A Minnesota soldier who suffered a traumatic brain injury in Iraq has been awarded the Purple Heart.

At a Thursday ceremony, Sen. Amy Klobuchar did the honors of pinning the Purple Heart on Sgt. Eric Phinney.

Sgt. Phinney was injured by an IED blast while serving in Iraq back in 2007. Last year the Pentagon started awarding the Purple Heart to veterans who suffer traumatic brain injuries, making the decision retroactive to 9-11.

"Today we honor your service, your courage and your bravery," Klobuchar said. "Thank you for what you've done for your country. For this you deserve the Purple Heart"

Phinney's future plans include getting his degree in information technology.

His wife is also an 18-year member of the National Guard.
