A louder voice in Congress for med-tech

Now there’s a Senate Medical Technology Caucus to complement the House Medical Technology Caucus in Congress.

And, no surprise: It’s led by Sen. Amy Klobuchar, a Democrat from Minnesota, and Sen. Scott Brown, a Republican from Massachusetts. Both states have a strong presence of med-tech companies.

The caucus aims to increase awareness about issues facing med-tech.

“These businesses not only spark medical breakthroughs, they save lives,” Klobuchar said in a statement. “Every day in every state small medical technology companies are driving the innovation agenda we need to compete in a global economy."

Stephen Ubl, the Minnesota native who heads the Washington, D.C., industry group AdvaMed, said he was pleased the Senate caucus has been relaunched.

Beyond med-tech’s contribution to “medical progress,” the industry is also “an engine of economic growth and a reliable source of high-paying jobs,” Ubl said in a statement Wednesday. “For American industry to compete successfully in today’s global economy, sound public policy is essential.”
