State Geothermal Resource Maps

  1. The PDF versions of the state maps require Adobe Acrobat Reader version 6, or higher. If you don't have Adobe Acrobat Reader, it's free and you can get it here.
  2. The JPG versions do not have the same level of detail as the PDF versions. For printing and detailed examination of the maps please use the PDF versions.
  3. The ARCInfo Interchange Files (E00 files) for the regions of known or potential geothermal resources for each state are provided. For more information on these files, and information on data used to prepare these maps, read Geothermal State Map Information [35 KB PDF] and the individual metadata file associated with each map.

Temperature at Depth Maps for the Continental United States

These maps were produced by the INL Geothermal Technologies Program with data from the Southern Methodist University Geothermal Laboratory. The maps depict estimated temperatures in degrees centigrade, at depths of 3, 4, 5, 6 and 10 km. These maps were produced with data current as of 4/12/2005. The SMU Geothermal Laboratory adds information to their database on a continual basis.

There are two sets of maps provided in three formats. One set has the estimated temperature and a set of contour lines at 1500m intervals representing the thickness of sedimentary basins in some areas of the United States. The second set has the estimated temperature only. Both sets are provided in PDF, JPEG and a low resolution JPEG file format.
