KRMH treats 20 percent of the total ANA battle injuries and support 27 percent of all intensive care unit admissions for the ANA that occur in the entire country of Afghanistan. The hospital averages 650 hospital bed days per month, said Sadiq.

“Before, the floor was porous and absorbed liquid waste and bacteria, which isn’t ideal for a hospital setting,” he said. “The new floor is easier to clean, more durable and provides better infection control.”

Fifty-three Afghan National Security Force members take an end of lesson knowledge test at a Kandahar Regional Military Hospital training classroom, Apr. 23, 2012. The ANSF members are taking a 64-week combat physician assistant course which started October 2011. The course was designed to prepare members to become medical advisors in a hospital, clinic or field setting. This is the first time the combat physician assistant course is being taught at KRMH.

“I wanted a job that would allow me to help people and possibly save their lives, so I took the entrance test for this course and passed,” said Wahab, an eight-year ANA veteran. “All the subjects in the course, so far, have been difficult, but it’s interesting. I’m looking forward to learning about pathology and pharmacology.”
