This position is located at the Naval Undersea Warfare center Newport Division. Work assignments are of limited scope and complexity, designed to assist the employee in developing a basic understanding of scientific practices and procedures and to develop familiarity with simple test equipment.Trainees provide assistance to higher level personnel by performing very routine tasks as applying standard formulae, preparing tables and graphs, testing, analysis, and data collection. Assignments are carried out in accordance with specific instructions and direction. Trainees become familiar with the operation, design characteristics, maintenance procedures and standard uses of equipment.

 

This position is for student who are looking to gain experience in Computer scientist while pursuing a bachelor's degree in Computer Science.


 

NUWC Division Newport...One of two divisions of the Naval Undersea Warfare Center, is the Navy's full-spectrum research, development, test and evaluation, engineering, and fleet support center for submarine warfare systems and many other systems associated with the undersea battlespace. NUWC Division Newport provides the technical foundation that enables the conceptualization, research, development, fielding, modernization, and maintenance of systems that ensure our Navy's undersea superiority. NUWC Division Newport is responsible, cradle to grave, for all aspects of systems under its charter, and is engaged in efforts ranging from participation in fundamental research to the support of evolving operational capabilities in the U.S. Navy fleet. The major thrust of NUWC Division Newport's activities is in applied research and system development.

ELIGIBILITY:

You are eligible if you are currently accepted for enrollment or enrolled in an college (including 4-year colleges/universities, community colleges, and junior colleges); professional; advanced degree programs; or other qualifying educational institution pursuing a qualifying degree or certificate.

 


Because this Internship may convert into a permanent Computer Scientist position, you must be pursuing a Bachelors degree in computer science or bachelor's degree with 30 semester hours in a combination of mathematics, statistics, and computer science.

PROGRAM COMPLETION AND CONVERSION:

·       Interns may be converted to a permanent position (or, in some limited circumstances, to a term position lasting 1-4 years) within 120 days of successful completion of the program.

·       To be eligible for conversion, Interns must:

o   Complete at least 640 hours of work experience acquired through the Internship Program

o   Complete their degree or certificate requirements

o   Meet the qualification standards for the position to which the Intern will be converted

o   Meet agency-specific requirements as specified in the Participant’s Agreement, and

o   Perform their job successfully.

·       Agencies may waive up to 320 of the required 640 hours of work for Interns who demonstrate high potential as evidenced by outstanding academic achievement and exceptional job performance.

·       In addition, students working in agencies through third-party intern providers may count up to 320 of the hours they work toward the 640 hour requirement.

·       Time spent under previous Internship Program appointments may count towards required work experience hours.


QUALIFYING EDUCATION:

1) Any of the following educational institutions or curricula that have been accredited by an accrediting body recognized by the secretary of the U.S. Department of Education:

(i)  A 2-year or 4-year college or university;

 

Education completed in foreign colleges or universities may be used to meet the qualification requirements, if the applicant can provide documentation indicating that the foreign education is comparable to that received in an accredited educational institution in the United States.
