Exploring Communities of Muslim Women Throughout History

Two NEH-funded scholars, Dr. Afsaneh Najmabadi of Harvard University and Dr. Mounira M. Charrad of the University of Texas, Austin, discuss communities of Muslim women throughout history.  Dr. Najmabadi discusses the project "Women's Worlds in Qajar,  Iran, which encapsulates the lives of women during the Qajar Era (1796-1925) by developing a comprehensive digital resource that preserves, links and renders accessible primary-source materials related to the social and cultural history of women's worlds in this period.

Dr. Charrad describes "Modernity Within Islam:  The Politics of Progressive Family Law Reform" which considers countries and time periods in which women actively engaged in a discourse of modernity and pursued reforms of Islamic family law.
