SBIR (Small Business Innovation Research) is a federal government program administered by 11 federal agencies for the purpose of helping to provide early-stage Research and Development funding to small technology companies (or individual entrepreneurs who form a company). Solicitations are released periodically from each of the agencies and present technical topics of R&D which the agency is interested in funding. Companies are invited to compete for funding by submitting proposals answering the technical topic needs of the agency's solicitation.

With the economic challenges that involve small businesses accessing financing opportunities, the SBIR program is in some cases the only opportunity available or early-stage technology companies seeking to obtain funding to support their research and development. These funds are not loans and are not required to be paid back.

The SBIR program does not base its decision on your companies credit report or collateral.

In addition, the federal government has supported various technologies. Our committee did a quick review of the awards received in Oregon to showcase the vast spectrum of technology supported by SBIR funding.
