PHOTOS: Fort Belvoir Warrior and Family Center Takes Shape

Friday, September 28, 2012

Construction of the USO’s new Warrior and Family Center in Fort Belvoir, Va., is progressing quickly and the USO wanted to give our tremendous supporters and followers a sneak peek at how the project is coming together.

The center's "topping out" ceremony -- signaling that the project had reached the halfway point -- occurred last June and a completion date is January 2013. Director of Logistics and Facilities Jonathan Matthews shares his thoughts.

The metal roof has been finished and the brick façade has been finished so let's head inside.

"Both these centers will do so much more than deliver on the USO's bread-and-butter promise of 'providing a home away from home'; they will reinforce the sterling work the military medical professionals are doing to start the wounded, ill and injured on their next stage in life with a positive outlook," Matthews said.

Drywall work has begun and should be completed by mid-October. That will then key the start for painting, which should be finished by the end of November.

The landscaping process has started with 50 percent of the site leveled off and ready for treatment with the planting process set to begin on Oct. 1.

Soon after the structure is completed, USO Metro will begin training volunteers and staff inside the center and prepping the environs for the January opening.

"The Warrior and Family Centers will lift the spirits of troops and families through therapeutic and morale building programs, while paying much deserved attention to the family members and professional caregivers of the wounded," Matthews said.
