The full report explains how increased lengths of stay have had negative effects on state prisons. Sections following an executive summary include: introduction; length of stay in states; unpacking the numbers—what shapes length of stay; what is gained by increased time served; and how states are modifying length of stay.
The State Fact Sheets show the change in length of stay and associated costs in easy to understand graphics and charts. Statistics are provided for: the average length of stay for 2009 and the increase since 1990; time served by offense type—all, violent, property, and drug; total state cost of keeping offenders released in 2009 in prison longer; and time served drivers.
