Thomas Lam is a CNST Postdoctoral Researcher in the Nanofabrication Research Group. He received B.S. and M.S. degrees in Ceramic Engineering, as well as a Ph.D. in Ceramics from Alfred University. His doctoral research applied glass formation theory to explain grain boundary evolution in the sintering of alumina. As a Federal Student Trainee in General Engineering at the Department of Energy National Energy Technology Laboratory, he used transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) to analyze skutterudite material, gasifier refractories, and mixtures of synthetic coal and petcoke slags. At the CNST, Thomas is working with Dr. Renu Sharma using TEM and SEM to evaluate the effects of varying synthesis conditions on the morphology and structure of carbon nanotube composites.
