Luther Vandross
Jim Derheim Stars and Stripes

Frankfurt, Germany, June 12, 1993: Luther Vandross, winner of the previous year's Ebony magazine poll as the number-one entertainer, shows fans at Frankfurt's Jahrhunderthalle how he secured the title. "His style is sophisticated, gentle," a Stripes review of the show noted. "His delivery [is] lavish. His on-stage demeanor [is] sincere." Vandross died Friday, July 1, 2005, never having fully recovered from a stroke he suffered in 2003 (although he did continue recording, and won four Grammys in 2004).
