Franklin Delano Roosevelt was the 32nd President of the United States. He is the only President who was elected four times in a row. Today, US Presidents can only serve two times in a row before they have to leave office.
Roosevelt was first elected as President in 1932. He was in office when World War II broke out, and also when Japanese planes attacked the United States at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii in 1941. It was after that attack that the United States joined World War II.
President Roosevelt was the person who received a letter from famous scientist Albert Einstein, encouraging the President to consider starting a project to make atomic bombs. After the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, Roosevelt made the building of an atomic bomb a priority.
Roosevelt himself is not believed to have ever visited Hanford, and he died before the first atomic bombs were tested and then dropped on Japan. However, without his order to start a program to learn about atomic weapons, followed by the successful operation to make them, Hanford may never have been built.
