ASSISTANT SECRETARY CAMPBELL: I also need to take this opportunity to personally, and on behalf of the U.S. government, to convey to you our deepest regret for the current controversy concerning alleged statements concerning Okinawa from one of our senior diplomats. I just want to underscore that these in no way reflect the attitude of warmth, gratitude and friendship that the United States has for the people of Okinawa and we are deeply apologetic for this controversy.
ASSISTANT SECRETARY CAMPBELL: I want to assure you that the United States is going to make every effort to underscore the strength of our relationship not just with the Japanese people but the people of Okinawa.
