ORISE Recognized for D&D Role at Hammond and Curtis Bay Depots

The Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE) was recognized by the Defense Logistics Agency at a 2008 ceremony at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) for its independent verification work at Defense National Stockpile Center (DNSC) depots in Curtis Bay, Md., and Hammond, Ind.
ORISE was honored along with ORNL and World Environmental, Inc., for their collaborative work in the decontamination and decommissioning (D&D) efforts at the two strategic materials storage depots.
As a subcontractor to ORNL, ORISE performed the historical site assessments followed by scoping, characterization, remediation support and final status radiological surveys. ORISE staff were also tasked with developing both sites’ radiological release criteria for buildings and soils. Regulatory compliance with the final release criteria was necessary for removal of the depots from U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission license.
On-site surveys were designed in accordance with the Multi-Agency Radiation Survey & Site Investigation Manual (MARSSIM) procedures, of which ORISE was an original contributor. The independent verification project spanned nearly 500 acres at Curtis Bay and 50 acres at Hammond, which resulted in the removal of 20 million pounds of contaminated soil and building debris between the two sites.
Cornel Holder, administrator at the DNSC, praised the team effort. “This project showed just how effectively [ORISE] and ORNL worked to get the job done,” he said. “It was a combined effort that provided impeccable results.”
