Master Chief Kurt Shoemaker assumed the duties of the 9th District’s Reserve Command Master Chief in November of 2009.  Prior to becoming the 9th District Reserve Commander Chief, Master Chief Shoemaker served in the capacity of Sector Reserve Command Master Chief for both Sector Detroit and Sector Buffalo.

Master Chief Shoemaker is a native of North Olmsted, Ohio and enlisted in the Coast Guard Reserve through the Direct Petty Officer program in 1992.  During his career he has been stationed at Station Lorain, PSU 302, plank owner of PSU 309, Station Marblehead, and the Reserve Command Master Chief of Sectors Detroit and Buffalo.  Master Chief Shoemaker has been recalled to Active Duty 4 times during his career.  He was recalled in support of Operations Uphold and Maintain Democracy with PSU 302 and deployed to Haiti in 1994.  In 1995 he was recalled with PSU 302 in support of Hurricane Louise. In 2001, while assigned to Station Marblehead, he was recalled for two years in support of Operations Noble Eagle and Liberty Shield.

Master Chief Shoemaker holds a Masters of Business Administration in Finance, a Bachelor of Business Administration in Labor Relations and is a graduate of the Coast Guard Chief Petty Officer Academy Reserve Class XIV.

Master Chief Shoemaker’s personal awards include; Coast Guard Commendation Medal with “O” device, Coast Guard Achievement Medal, three Commandant Letters of Commendation Ribbons with “O” device, Presidential Unit Citation, Secretary Outstanding Unit Award, Coast Guard Unit Commendation with “O” device, two Coast Guard Meritorious Unit Commendations with “O” device, Navy Meritorious Unit Commendation with “O” device, two Coast Guard Meritorious Team Commendations with “O” device, five Coast Guard Reserve Good Conduct Medals,  two National Defense Service Medals, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Humanitarian Service Medal, Transportation 9/11 ribbon, two Coast Guard Special Operations Service Ribbons, Armed Forces Reserve Medal with Hour Glass and 3 mobilizations devices, Expert Rifle Medal, Expert Pistol Medal, PSU Insignia and the permanent Boat Forces and Coxswain Breast Insignias.
