Another round of federal green job training money was awarded Wednesday -- in all, $150 million.
It's all federal stimulus money -- part of the U.S. Department of Labor's Pathways Out of Poverty Program.
"The funds are for low-income individuals and individuals who may have been laid off or downsized," said Robert Matthews, executive dean for Workforce and Career Development at MCC.
The entire grant program is expected to train 200 students and place 140 people into unsubsidized employment, according to a statement released by Congressman Dale Kildee. [1/13/10]
Star-Tribune (Minnesota) - Minnesota gets $7 million for 'green' jobs
Congressman Keith Ellison is announcing Wednesday that Minneapolis will get $4 million to train people in low-income areas to work in the energy efficiency and renewable energy industries.
Another $3 million is going to the White Earth Band of Chippewa.
Ellison says the grant empowers disadvantaged communities and helps with critical investment in green technologies, such as weatherizing homes – “something many families badly need for the frigid winters in Minnesota.” [1/13/10]
St. Louis Post Dispatch (Missouri) - Danforth Center wins $44 million stimulus award
The Obama administration announced this afternoon that a consortium led by the Donald Danforth Plant Science Center in St. Louis is the winner of a $44 million Recovery Act award for research into converting algae into biofuels.
Two more grants totaling $5.6 million for Better Family Life, of St. Louis, and Alternative Solutions, of Springfield, Mo., also were announced this afternoon by the Labor Department.
The $5.6 million will be devoted to training unemployed workers from high poverty areas for green-energy jobs such as weatherization and rehabbing.
Rep. William Lacy Clay, D-St. Louis, said the award could provide jobs and “establish the St. Louis region as a leading center for the development of renewable fuels and other green energy technologies.”
Rep. Russ Carnahan, D-St. Louis, had pushed for the Danforth Center to be included in the program. He said in a statement that “investments like this are helping to set us on a real path toward energy independence …” [1/13/10]
Mid-Hudson News (New York) - Orange County secures $3.5 million in energy efficiency stimulus money
The US Department of Energy has awarded Orange County government $3.5 million in energy efficiency grants through the stimulus package to help finance upgrades to buildings to increase energy efficiency, reduce energy usage and costs, create local jobs and lower carbon pollution.
Activities eligible for the funds include energy audits and building retrofits in the residential and commercial sector, the development and implementation of advanced building codes and inspections, and the creation of financial incentive programs for energy efficiency improvements.
“There is nothing better than boosting the clean energy sector and creating jobs for New Yorkers all in one fell swoop,” said Senator Charles Schumer. [1/13/10]
Augusta Chronicle (Georgia) - Area benefiting from stimulus funds
Nine months into the Obama administration's stimulus plan for the nation's economy, the flow of dollars into the Augusta region has generated more than news.
Anglers at Thurmond Lake can enjoy new courtesy docks and recreation facilities. Medical College of Georgia researchers are awaiting funds for research and computers. Road widenings and repavings are moving forward ahead of schedule. Even the Augusta Housing Authority will see some green that includes $6.1 million in renovations for Peabody Apartments.
The biggest stimulus apple in the local economy is tied to the $1.6 billion in U.S. Energy Department funding at Savannah River Site, where thousands of workers are either at work or being added in hopes of completing environmental cleanup projects years ahead of schedule.
"The total head count as of Jan. 8, 2010, is 2,860," SRS spokesman Jim Giusti said Wednesday. The goal announced at the program's onset was to create or retain at least 3,000 jobs. [1/14/10]
