TEACHER COMPENSATION SURVEY

PURPOSE

The Teacher Compensation Survey collects data on public school teachers. This information includes base and total salaries, expenditures for benefits, highest degree earned, years of teaching experience, age, race, and gender data. The United States Code, Titles 13 and 20, authorizes these surveys and provides for voluntary responses.The U.S. Census Bureau is the primary collection agent and is authorized to collect public teacher compensation data under Title P.L. 97-35, as amended by the Elementary and Secondary Education Act of 1965. This data is part of the U.S. Department of the Education's Common Core of Data series.

COVERAGE

Seven states participated in the pilot study, conducted in 2007 (collecting data for the 2005-2006 school year). In the second year, 18 states provided data. In future cycles, participation is expected to include all 50 states, the District of Columbia, and 5 outlying areas under U.S. jurisdiction: American Samoa, Guam, Northern Marianas, Puerto Rico, and the Virgin Islands.

CONTENT

The Teacher Compensation Survey collects a limited amount of data on all public school teachers from participating states. This information includes base and total salaries, expenditures for benefits, highest degree earned, years of teaching experience, age, race, and gender data.

FREQUENCY

Annual. The Bureau of the Census has been the data collection agent for the National Center for Education Statistics' Teacher Compensation Survey since 2007, the inception of the survey.

METHODS

This survey is a web collection. All respondents transmit their files through the survey website.

USES

The data are used by researchers and government policymakers to address important education policy and research issues.

SPECIAL FEATURES

The Teacher Compensation Survey is the first annual collection of individual teacher salaries, health benefits, retirement data and personal characteristics.
