CENSUS OF JUVENILES IN RESIDENTIAL PLACEMENT (CJRP)

PURPOSE

To provide a count of juveniles in state, county, municipal and privately run juvenile correctional facilities. CJRP is a continuation of the Children in Custody Census that has been conducted since 1970. The Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention Act of 2002, as amended (Title 42, Section 5661 of the United States Code), provides the authority for conducting this data collection.

COVERAGE

CJRP collects data from over 3100 public and private juvenile facilities that hold juvenile delinquents and/or status offenders.

CONTENT

CJRP collects specific information such as gender, race, most serious offense, admission date and adjudication status for each juvenile delinquent/status offender in residential placement. CJRP also collects information on facility type and security levels of each facility

FREQUENCY

This is a biennial census.

METHODS

A mail-out census with mail, electronic or fax reporting options.

PRODUCTS

The Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention (OJJDP) is responsible for generating reports from the data files that are delivered by Census staff. Data is subject to confidentiality limitations.

USES

OJJDP uses the data for planning and funding of juvenile programs. Researches also use the data to analyze trends in regards to juvenile confinement.

SPECIAL FEATURES

Provides data to OJJDP for program planning and program funding. CJRP also provides the primary source for statistics on national juvenile confinement.
